Firefly RPG - Echoes of War

I am pleased to announce my position as Lead Developer for the Echoes of War line connected to the upcoming Firefly RPG. The line is a series of adventures that can be played either by the Serenity crew or by a crew you create on your own.

Here's the official press release, where Firefly RPG Lead Developer Monica Valentinelli says some very nice things about me.

  1. Hi Rob, congratulations. I look forward to your output.

    (Now the pitch)

I have a Serenity RPG scenario, that I think would be a perfect fit for the Echoes of War line.

The crew are contacted by an old mentor, who needs their help in transporting food supplies to a guerrilla unit he set up during the war. He hope to persuade they to lay down their arms in a local conflict that has dragged on since unification day. What they discover on their dangerous journey forces to the crew to re-appraise their morals and their motives, and face up to one of the horrors on modern conflict.

I'm sure you'll have guessed that there is a touch of Heart of Darkness to the set up, but the twists I designed gives the scenario a contemporary edge that resonates with a 21st century audience. I've run this scenario for a few groups now, both using the series crew and player-generated characters, ad they've all enjoyed it. While I have't developed any RPG materials for publication before, I am an experienced gamer, having table-topped since 1981.

I'd love the opportunity to develop this scenario for the new Firefly game, but of course I'm sure you already have all the content you need. Still, I figure - you don't ask, you ain't gonna get.

    1. Hi Matthew,

We are still finalizing plans on who will be writing the Echoes of War adventures. We have a few authors lined up, but the future is always in motion (to borrow from another franchise). If we open up the line to outside submissions, I will definitely be posting that information here.

In the meantime, I encourage you to keep writing. Even putting scenarios, characters and the like up on a blog is a good way to get feedback and hone your craft. You never know who might be reading.

      Rob

    2. Thanks for the reply Rob, and the encouragement. Sadly I write so much for work and for my PhD, that I'm quite "worded out" when it comes to sharing my gaming stuff online. I haven't touched my Airship Pirates Blog in over a year (though to be fair, our group only meets three or four times, per annum, and we each take turns running a game, so I'm only one session behind on that!).

I did write quite a bit for The Signal last year though including a number of pieces on the demise of the Serenity RPG and possible alternative rule sets. And this month, they've just published a piece I bashed out which discusses MWP's new Firefly license:

Though I'm not a crew regular anymore, I still keep in touch, and I know they'd love to do an interview with you and/or any of the development team, when the time is right.

I'll carry on running my scenario Hell's Ditch, at conventions, and after GenCon and the preview release, I'll convert it to Cortex Plus.
